Newborn Photography Frequently Asked Questions

So you are looking to book a photo session for your newborn, which is great! I have tried to answer some questions you may have.

  1. How old should my baby be for a newborn photo shoot?

This can be a bit photographer dependent, but most newborn photographers will suggest the best time is between 4 to 14 days (plus a little bit). The reason for this is so that your baby can be photographed when they are still sleepy and curly to pose. As your baby becomes older, they will become more alert and awake for longer periods of time, and this can make settling them more difficult. Also, of course, they are still so tiny, which is so special to document.

  2. When should I book my newborn photo session?

Once you have decided on your photographer, it is wise to book in the second trimester to secure your booking. Many reputable newborn photographers have limited spots and book well in advance.

  3. There are so many newborn photographers, how do I choose one?

There are many newborn photographers out there. Take a look at their portfolios and go with the images that appeal to you most and fit your budget. There is a marked difference between a lifestyle shoot and posed newborn photography so you will need to choose your look. Some newborn photographers will travel to you, others will not. All newborn photographers in Melbourne should have their immunisations up to date, working with children check, a clear covid policy, insurance and should be trained on safe newborn handling and posing. If they are registered with the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) that is a big plus as this body works to maintain professional standards amongst photographers in Australia.

  4. How can I prepare for my session?

(From here on is photographer dependent): I ask my clients to feed their baby well before they leave the house for the session. This is so they are full for the shoot, and in the car ride to the studio, their tummy has time to settle. Bring your baby dressed in a onesie one size too big and no singlet. The aim is to keep your baby calm and settled. Bring nappies, a dummy, if your baby uses one and be prepared to feed your baby during the session as it can go up to 3-4 hours. Bring snacks and drinks for you. You do not need to bring any outfits for your baby as I have a studio full of wraps and props. However if you have an heirloom blanket or something you would like in a photo, you are welcome to bring it. If you are having family photos, remember to bring a co-ordinated outfit with your partner.

  5. What should I expect from my session?

Your baby will always come first in every session and their safety is top priority. Don’t worry of your baby won’t settle as newborn photographers have quite a few tricks up their sleeve to facilitate this. If you baby won’t sleep, it is still possible to capture beautiful images, but they will most likely be swaddled and not nudie shots. Most of my sessions last around 2.5 to 3 hours but I do ask my clients to block out 4 hours just in case. This allows for feeding and settling time if required. I will ask you beforehand if you have any colour or styling preferences for your session. The room will be warm and cosy to aid your baby to sleep. Ultimately, you should be able to sit and relax and even snooze if you choose.

Your newborn photo session should be a relaxed, fun and memorable experience. Doing a little research will result in photos you love, and a legacy for your children and grandchildren to treasure.
